Manila, Philippines – Anakpawis Party-list Representative Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao today urged the house leadership to end its “fishing expedition” on the supposed violations of Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno. The complaint of Lorenzo Gadon that caused the house proceedings has been contradicted by the chief justice and up to now, there has been no significant legal basis to initiate her impeachment. The lawmaker also criticized the house leadership’s violation of the Sereno’s doctor-patient confidentiality, which is a clear infringement of her democratic rights.

“With all the endless house proceedings, the chairperson of supposedly Committee on Justice, purportedly operating on hard facts and evidences, resorted to urging the chief justice to voluntary resign, to save time and money,” Casilao said.

He added that the house leadership appears to fail to “totally destroy” the public perception of the chief justice, hence, the filing of quo warranto against her by Solicitor General Jose Calida.

“This is an outright gesture of ganging up on Sereno, as political pressure for her resignation, instead of the due process of raising the impeachment to the senate as the court, where she expressed confidence to defend against the accusations against her,” the lawmaker said.

Casilao and his group declared to campaign against the impeachment of the chief justice as they view this as a step to an authoritarian regime, where the separation of powers of supposedly independent branches of the government, or the “check and balance” is undermined.

“With the executive and the legislative branches, obviously plotting to implement major changes in the governance, the only remaining stumbling block against them is the judiciary under the chief justice, in this light, we call on the public to stand watch for its independence, stand with CJ Sereno,” Casilao ended. ###
