Manila, Philippines Anakpawis Party-list Representative Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao today strongly condemned the extra judicial killing of the groups’local coordinator, Apolinio Maranan in Brgy. Mandug, Buhangin District, Davao City last Saturday perpetrated by alleged elements of the 16th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.
“We condemn the extra-judicial killing of our local leader Apolonio Maranan, we also extend our condolences to his bereaved family, we demand justice as well as for other victims of EJK under the Duterte regime,” Casilao said in a statement.
Maranan is the 55th activist who fell victim to extra-judicial killing in Davao region. Moreover, the peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas and human rights group Karapatan already documented 98 farmer victims under the Duterte gov’t.
Casilao claimed that the killings are reminiscent of what were carried out under the past regimes of Arroyo and Aquino. He added that the Duterte gov’t’s bloody record is following suit those of the Arroyo with 603 peasants killed January 2001 to June 2010; and Aquino with 270 from July 2010 to June 2016.
“We hold Duterte primarily responsible for the continuing killings of activists in the country, as he already exposed himself as an “amboy” and fascist, siding with the militarists, instead of fulfilling the clamor of poor sectors for fundamental reforms in the country,” he ended. ###
