Anakpawis urges various sectors, Duterte followers
Support Hacienda Luisita farmers vs. Cojuangco-Aquinos

MANILA, Philippines – The militant Anakpawis Party-list urged various sectors, especially followers of President Rodrigo Duterte to express support to Hacienda Luisita farmers, who remain to as victims of the abuses perpetrated by the family of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. Last July 1, lackeys of the Cojuangco-Aquino family belonging to the Luisita Estate Management (LEM) and Tarlac Dev’t Corp. (Tadeco) destroyed crops on a 30-hectare parcel of land and demolished a farmer’s house in Brgy. Mapalacsiao, inside the hacienda.

The Cojuangco-Aquino family is taking advantage of a Memorandum issued by the chief-of-staff of former Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Virgilio Delos Reyes, regarding the installation of still unnamed agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) on lands already cultivated by legitimate farmers since 2005.

Yesterday, the famous Duterte supporter, Margaux “Mocha” Uson shared on social media a video of the lamentation of farmer Bernardina L. Bais, 66 years old, as her crops were destroyed by people associated to Cojuangco-Aquino firms LEM and Tadeco. It has reached at least 217,000 views and 10,000 shares.

“We urge followers of the President to rally behind the farmers of Hacienda Luisita. They are against the haciendero family of the former president, who used DAR for their self-interest and undermined the Supreme Court decision to distribute the lands,” Anakpawis Party-list Representative Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao said in a statement.

Casilao and Makabayan lawmakers recently filed House Resolution No. 27, pushing for a thorough review of how DAR implemented the SC decision, particularly the preposterous “tambiolo” system or raffling out lots, the coercive signing of Application to Purchase and Farmers’ Undertaking (APFU), reduced land coverage, fencing of lands by Tadeco, and systematic abuses on farmers such as destruction of crops.

Anakpawis said that the actions of the Cojuangco-Aquinos are classic despotism against poor and powerless farmers, hence, they extremely need the support of different sectors in the country who aspire for a fundamental change in society.

“We appeal to Duterte supporters to work for effecting fundamental change in Hacienda Luisita, akin of the President’s promise,” Casilao said.

Casilao said that it may be in a form of solidarity messages, denunciation of the Cojuangco-Aquino family’s actions, exposure visits to the farms and communities of farmers in Tarlac, joining of protests and maximum dissemination of the Hacienda Luisita issue. ###
